Sebastian Rochford & Jason Moran - Years by Days And Nights At The Takeaway
Formats: Digital (DANATT 7)
Release Date: 27 July 2012
Sebastian Rochford’s latest addition to the monthly Days And Nights At The Takeaway series sees him collaborating with American jazz pianist Jason Moran.
Moran's innovative approach has garnered much acclaim since he emerged in the late ‘90s. His work for Blue Note and his group The Bandwagon and others has cemented a reputation as one of the finest jazz musicians working today.
The track for The Takeaway took a slightly different approach to the other singles in the series. “Since Jason lives in New York, I asked him to send me a recording of himself on piano that I could then mess with at my place,” says Seb. “I was blown away by the music he sent and felt a little intimidated by it. I decided to not listen to it again until I threw myself in and improvised live drum takes and live iPad and synth figures, and took it from there.”
Instead of a remix, this month the second track is Moran’s original improvised piece, prior to Rochford's contributions. “I felt the original piece Jason sent was so incredible that I wanted other people to hear it,” says Seb.
“This improvisation was taken from a solo concert in northern Italy,” adds Jason. “Midway through my performance I realised, I owe Seb some music! So, this piece arose out of the many conversations Seb and I have had about sound. I thought the flurry of glissandos would pique his interest. I love the outcome.”
The Takeaway series has so far seen Rochford working with Soumik Datta, Leo Abrahams, Jehst, Tom Skinner, Gina Loring, Ranjana Ghatak, LV, Micachu, Alice Grant, Simon Bookish and Acoustic Ladyland bandmates Pete Wareham and Ruth Goller, with all the recordings being made at his London studio in a disused Takeaway. Every single and remix can be streamed on the project’s Bandcamp page.
